January 12th 2018

It is my joyful honor to announce that as of January 15, 2018 the Senior Department and the Recreation Department will be open for programs, events and services! Just three weeks after our closure and with new information regarding regulations pertaining to past grant acquisitions, at the January 11th City Council Meeting Fraser City Council voted unanimously to fund these services for all ages in our community.

While we are so grateful for the opportunity to continue to serve, the City is still facing hardships that the City Administration and City Council will be working towards resolve. The Recreation and Senior departments will be returning with changes aimed at minimizing the effect these departments have on the General Fund. These two departments are a small section of the big picture, but with the focus of City Administration and City Council to move Fraser into a healthy and stable position, a bright future is on the horizon after we work through these challenges.

In the coming weeks the Recreation and Senior departments will start making in-office reductions and increasing participant fees for some of our services to make the departments more financially stable while still providing quality programming and events for our community. We ask for patience as we transition into this new time, and we ask for understanding as all forthcoming changes are directly tied to our ability to continue to provide Recreation and Senior services in the future.

Throughout the past year while these two departments were in uncertain times, community members have stepped up and asked how they can help. There are three things that you can do! First is to reach out to myself or the department with any ideas, suggestions, comments or questions you may have. We are here to serve you, and with every public input received we get closer and closer to providing exactly what you need. Second, we are always looking for volunteers! Have a passion for a craft or sport or wish to assist in preparation of one of our city events? Whether you want to teach a class or just help out we have volunteer opportunities for every age and every ability. And lastly, if you use our services and like what we do, share that with your neighbors and friends. Our costs go down as we get more participants so share the good news! It’s a win for everyone when you invite a friend or family to join in one of the many services we offer in the Recreation and Senior departments.

And so, from all the staff here at the Fraser Activity Center, we thank everyone for their support for these departments. We look forward to serving you and continuing to provide recreation services and programs for all ages and abilities.

Thank you,
